When most people think about Alaska, they picture glaciers, mountains, and wildlife — and they’re not wrong. But one of the most unforgettable travel experiences we’ve ever had happened during the land portion of our trip in Fairbanks, Alaska, where winter feels like something out of another world.
From snow-covered forests to the Northern Lights dancing overhead, this part of Alaska gave us experiences we simply couldn’t have had anywhere else.
And one of the highlights of the entire journey was visiting the incredible wilderness of Denali.
Exploring the Wilderness Near Denali National Park

No trip to interior Alaska feels complete without experiencing the area around Denali National Park, home to the tallest mountain in North America.
Even in winter, the scenery around Denali is hard to describe. Massive mountains, endless forests, and wide open landscapes make you realize just how big Alaska really is.
This area is also one of the best places to see wildlife. Moose, caribou, and other animals live freely here, and it’s not unusual to spot them while driving or exploring the trails.
Being in this part of Alaska feels less like visiting a park and more like stepping into true wilderness.
Cross Country Skiing Through the Alaskan Forest
One of the first things we did in Fairbanks was go cross country skiing, and it quickly became one of our favorite experiences.
The trails were surrounded by snow-covered trees, and the quiet was something you almost never experience in everyday life.
No traffic. No noise.Just the sound of skis sliding across fresh snow.
It felt like being inside a winter movie.
Ice Sculptures at the Fairbanks Ice Festival
Fairbanks is known for its incredible winter celebrations, and seeing the ice sculpture displays in person was amazing.
Entire towers, slides, and detailed artwork were carved completely out of ice. Some pieces were taller than buildings, and at night they were lit with colors that made the whole place glow.
It’s one of those experiences you don’t fully understand until you see it yourself.
Snowshoeing in the Quietest Place We’ve Ever Been
We also spent time snowshoeing through the Alaskan wilderness, and it might have been the quietest place we’ve ever stood in our lives.
No wind. No cars. No crowds.Just snow-covered trees in every direction.
Alaska has a way of slowing everything down, and moments like this remind you why people fall in love with it.
Dog Sledding – A True Alaska Experience
Dog sledding was something we always wanted to try, and doing it in Fairbanks felt like the real Alaska.
The dogs were full of energy and couldn’t wait to run, and once the sled started moving, the only sound was the runners sliding across the snow.
It’s fast, it’s exciting, and it feels like stepping back in time to how people traveled through Alaska for generations.
Watching the Northern Lights From a Yurt
One of the most unforgettable nights of the trip was watching the Northern Lights outside a heated yurt.
We stood outside in the cold, looking up at the sky, and suddenly the green lights started moving across the darkness.
It’s one of those moments pictures never fully capture. You just stand there freezing, smiling, and realizing you’re seeing something truly rare.
Moose Sightings and Wild Alaska Everywhere
In Alaska, wildlife isn’t something you plan to see — it just happens.
We saw moose walking through town, completely unbothered by people.
It’s a reminder that Alaska is still wild in a way most places aren’t anymore.
Soaking in Thermal Hot Springs Surrounded by Snow
One of the most unforgettable experiences of the trip was visiting natural hot springs while snow covered everything around us.
Imagine sitting in steaming hot water while snow piles up on the rocks and trees nearby.
Cold air, hot water, snow everywhere — it sounds crazy, but it might have been the most relaxing moment of the entire trip.
Why the Land Portion of Alaska Is So Special
The land portion of Alaska lets you experience the destination in a completely different way.
You’re not just looking at Alaska.
You’re in it.
You feel the cold.
You hear the silence.
You see wildlife up close.
You explore places like Denali that most people only see in pictures.
Fairbanks in the winter felt like a true adventure, and it reminded us why Alaska is one of the most unforgettable destinations in the world.
Alaska isn’t just a trip. It’s something you experience with all your senses.
